So, I didn’t forget to post poetry on my birthday but did manage to miss the day after. Go figure. Here are two poems to make up for yesterday’s loss. I even chose a great one for April 17 in honor of the New Moon. Better late than never, I guess.
New Moon by Ted Kooser

How much it must bear on its back,
a great ball of blue shadow
yet somehow it shines, keeps up
an appearance. For hours tonight,
I walked beneath it, learning.
I want to be better at carrying sorrow.
If my face is a mask, formed over
the shadows that fill me,
may I smile on the world like the moon.

“I’ll Tell You How the Sun Rose” by Emily Dickinson

I’ll tell you how the sun rose, —
A ribbon at a time.
The steeples swam in amethyst,
The news like squirrels ran.
The hills untied their bonnets,
The bobolinks begun.
Then I said softly to myself,
“That must have been the sun!”
But how he set, I know not.
There seemed a purple stile
Which little yellow boys and girls
Were climbing all the while
Till when they reached the other side,
A dominie in gray
Put gently up the evening bars,
And led the flock away.
