Book two of my SRL is Chera Hammons’ stunning poetry collection Birds of America. Thank you NetGalley and Random House for the ARC of Birds of America. It is greatly appreciated!
It is rare that I rate a book five stars, but this is a truly beautiful collection of poetry and more than deserves it. So many of Hammons’ poems touched my heart and spoke to some of my own life experiences. I found Hammons’ introduction to be just as moving as her poems, and I copied so many of her thoughts into my journal to refer back to.
Hammons writes about losing and finding oneself; of the healing to be found in nature; and of monsters wearing the faces of the people we love and admire. She speaks of saving ourselves by saving others and of the wisdom of bees. Her words soar with birds both real and imagined.
In this book you will hike forest paths, run through pastures, and see that we are stewards of this world, Her servants, and protecting Her means healing ourselves.
Chera Hammons’ Birds of America is a gift for the ages, one to read and reread, and treasure. Birds of America is scheduled for publication June 6, 2026.
