“Uncredited: Women’s Overlooked, Misattributed, and Stolen Work” by Allison Tyra is an excellent book. She names and credits literally hundreds of women who were not recognized or rewarded for their achievements, from art to medicine to space exploration and beyond. As an amateur scholar of women’s history (i.e. I am not a student), I recognized some of these brilliant women; others I had unsurprisingly never heard of. Tyra’s book is an epic of female experience: the struggles we face, the biases we must fight against, the acknowledgements we are denied. This book should be read by all, though there will be plenty of naysayers that will insist that “it didn’t happen that way.” (And we all know who will say things like that, don’t we?)
Allison Tyra’s book should be recognized as the very valuable work of history it is. It deserves a place in classrooms as a reference book and a history of women’s experiences and accomplishments. Read this for the information, read it just because, or read it and allow yourself to fall into rabbit holes of related history. Whatever your reason, read this.
In Permission, memoirist Elissa Altman asks “Who has the right to tell a family’s story? Who “owns” a family’s history? Do we need permission to tell our story?”
Altman says, “The writing of memoir is often fraught; our friends, colleagues, families, entire cultures turn writers into pariahs for what we create, for who we are, for how we dare take ownership of our own stories.” She also writes “Beyond time, space, and money to write, permission is the single biggest hurdle that the creative—new or accomplished—faces, and often over the most mundane of issues.”
I am not a memoirist; most of what I write is completely made up, influenced by true events perhaps, but very loosely so. I do not feel the desire to tell true stories, and I have never considered what my family’s reaction would be if I chose to do so. I expect there would be anger, as Altman experienced. I am sure I would be told I was wrong, lying, or accused of fabricating everything for attention. Others would relish the attention it would bring, being of the mindset that adverse attention is better than lack of attention. I do not think I would be disowned as Altman was; I think I would be allowed to remain so people could be disgusted with me.
Altman reminds her students, “No one owns the right to craft our story but us, but we must remember that the complex work of memoir demands that we also write with clarity, compassion, and ambiguity, which allows the reader to determine their own response to the story.”
Elissa Altman’s Permission is an outstanding presentation of memoir, writing, self-exploration, and how one experiences (and suffers from) a family’s reaction to a secret that needs to be told. I will be supplementing my e-copy with a print edition for both reference and the reminder that sometimes being true to oneself means standing alone in the face of disapproval and still telling my story.
Somehow it is March. This month will see the change of the season as we finally (!) move into spring. It is the season of new beginnings, growth, and change. I can’t wait!
I feel as though February left me scrambling. I didn’t accomplish any of my goals for the month and made zero progress on any of my projects. I did write to some new people for InCoWriMo that I want to keep in touch with (March goal 1: keep up with my correspondence) and I finished my February TBR list as well as a couple extra books. (March goal 2: write and post review of TBR books as I finish them)
I am a little disappointed that I didn’t make any progress on my professional or personal goals, but I have decided to give myself some grace. I have wasted far too many years being angry with myself for not being perfect and doing everything I feel I am “supposed” to do. Why should I feel that I am less than if I do not do everything perfectly? (Childhood trauma does great things to your mind, let me tell you) At almost fifty I can finally look at myself in the mirror and say, “You are good enough.” My poor husband has been telling me this for over twenty years. The man is a saint.
So, March has arrived, and I am starting fresh. Didn’t make February’s goals? Try again. I have my calendar blocked out with projects, and my book club, self-care days, and things that I like to do. (March goal 3: Sunday afternoon walks. Does this make me old? I mean, I am almost fifty…) My word for the month is “Nurture” and I intend to. I will nurture my talent, my soul, and myself.
My March TBR reflects this, not with self-help books (which I love to read, by the way; the authors are all so nice. …I never take their advice…) but in observing Women’s History Month. Woman’s Lore: 4,000 Years of Sirens, Serpents, and Succubi by Sarah Clegg: Demonic temptresses – from siren-mermaids to Lilith – are well known today, and their mythology focuses around the seductive danger they pose to men. This “Sister Read” went by much faster than the last; granted, it is a smaller book, but it also reads really quickly. It is also extremely relevant to present circumstances in the US. Which is appalling, as the events in this book took place in the 1860s. It reiterates the fact that history does repeat itself, and if we do not learn from the past there will be no future.

Last year I managed to beat my goal of 145 books, finishing at 152. This year I have set a goal of 150 books. I have completed nine so far, seven of which were poetry eBooks with an average of 150 pages, give or take. I have some hefty books on my planned TBRs for the next few months, March especially, so we’ll see how quickly I get through them. I am a fast reader naturally, but I do not just breeze through a book for the sake of getting it finished. I do take the time to read thoughtfully and make notes or copy things into my Commonplace Book. Many of my nonfiction books look like little porcupines with sticky tab quills.
My reading time will also be slightly reduced as I am setting aside time in the evenings to write because my poetry manuscript is not going to finish itself (though it would probably require far less editing if it did). How is it that something that sounds so meaningful when you first write it sounds like a four year old telling a story when you go back and read it a week later? I mean no disrespect to four year olds: my Finch is an excellent storyteller. His Mόraί, on the other hand, is a slightly off-kilter poet.
I recently shared a post about my February TBR, so I won’t review it here. My March reading list will be in the theme of Women’s History Month. Sister and I are expecting to have TWTCNS finished by late March, and we have chosen one of the books on my TBR to be our next Sister Read.
February is fast approaching and I’m thinking about books! I didn’t finish my January TBR as of this writing, and I will not unless I stay home and do nothing but read for the next three days (one can dream), so I will have to move those books to another month, or the end of February is there is time. Ordinarily I would just move the books to the following month, but I placed my February library orders last week based off random picks from page 124 of my Goodreads list and all of them have come in already! I will also be continuing to read The Woman They Could Not Silence with my sister, and Margaret Atwood’s Paper Boats if I finish my planned four before the end of the month. I picked up an autographed copy while out on a Sister Day last fall. We have another one coming up next week in Portsmouth, NH, I can’t wait!
Books I’m trying to wrap up by the end of the week are Ezra Pound’s Literary Essays and Virginia Woolf’s Writer’s Diary. Woolf’s diary is a bit of a slog, and her overt classicism overshadows the interesting and valuable points she makes about writing. I am very torn about reading Ezra Pound. He makes brilliant statements about the craft of writing, but his background makes me wish these were written by someone else. Last year I listened to a podcast that discussed if it is okay to appreciate work created by terrible people; the author was speaking of a musician whose work she loved, but as she became an adult and learned about what kind of person he was, listening to his music made her question her own morals. I feel the same way about my books by Marion Zimmer Bradley. She was a brilliant wordsmith and created a realm of fantasy that I spent many wonderful hours wandering, but she was a vile person. Ezra Pound’s background is equally upsetting.
A 2021 article from The New York Times, written by Jennifer Finney Boylan addresses the question of whether one can separate the art from the artist, and I do feel it is a weighty question. (https://www.nytimes.com/2021/11/03/opinion/music-pop-culture-justice.html) Disturbingly, we are seeing more and more creatives being held up for unacceptable behavior; I fail to understand why anyone thinks they are above the rules of law and common decency. But this is not what this post is about. This is about the fact that I am reading essays by Ezra Pound, and while his personal beliefs give me the ick, he was a gifted writer, and I appreciate his work.

My sister and I are proud Muffin Wallopers and set aside time every Sunday to engage in pursuits associated with this title. “What is a Muffin Walloper?” you ask. Allow me to enlighten you.
Per WordGenius.com, “A “muffin-walloper” is an unmarried woman who gathers with friends to gossip. In the Victorian era, these conversations often happened over tea and cakes — hence the muffin part of the phrase.” Now, my sister and I are both happily married women. And we don’t actually gossip during these Sunday afternoon sessions. We brew ourselves cups of tea, make nice little snacks, and sit down with our phones, pens, notebooks, and a highlighter or two and discuss our current “Sister Read,” a book we have chosen to read together. We tried to host an online book group and invited other Muffin Wallopers to join us, but no one participated, so we decided to go solo (duo?). The phones are a necessity because I live in Western Massachusetts, and she lives in Coastal Maine.
Since summer, we have been reading Philippa Gregory’s Normal Women:Nine Hundred Years of Making History. This book has been both enlightening and absolutely infuriating. Spoiler alert: absolutely nothing has changed regarding women’s rights, roles, safety, or status in nine hundred friggin years. We are holding our final discussion for this book on Monday 12/9 after we wrap up the Afterword (postponed due to my daughter’s baby shower on 12/8…yay baby! My youngest grandson is due in January, and I cannot wait to meet him. In the meantime, I shall continue to spoil his brother and sister.)
We have agreed to take the rest of December off to work on our December TBRs. I shared mine in a previous post. (see the link here: https://nicolekperkins.com/2024/12/01/december-tbr/ if you are interested in taking a look) By an amusing consequence, we both decided to read The Old Magic of Christmas by Linda Raedisch. I expect we will have a phone call to discuss it once we have finished it. I’m currently reading it; I have no idea what Sister is reading at present. Besides Normal Women, that is.
January 1st will see us begin our next Sister Read, The Woman They Could Not Silence: One Woman, Her Incredible Fight for Freedom, and the Men Who Tried to Make Her Disappear by Kate Moore. (Henceforth I shall refer to this book as TWTCNS because like all kickass titles it’s very long.) I have read Kate Moore’s incredible and horrifying book The Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America’s Shining Women. My sister has not, and I did suggest this as our next book, but we both own a copy of TWTCNS because I forgot I had a Kindle copy and bought it in paperback. Guess who got a free paperback copy of TWTCNS?
The Woman They Could Not Silence tells the story of Elizabeth Packard, jailed in an insane asylum by her husband for being inconvenient. (Minor spoiler, Elizabeth Packard was not mentally ill.) From Goodreads:

For the last few months my husband and brother-in-law have been watching Sunday afternoon football to the not-so-muffled sounds of their wives’ raging over topics discussed by Philippa Gregory in her book. I think by the time Sister and I are done reading TWTCNS our long-suffering husbands are going to hope we read something much lighter in topic, like True Crime.
I will post a review on Normal Women after Sister and I have our final discussion so I can share her thoughts on the books as well. For those of you who may have already looked it up, it is a monster of a book, covering a lot of material, some of it very hard to read.

My hope is to be here much more regularly and I have all kinds of ideas for future posts. This isn’t a proper post, just a quick check in to say hello and share the books I plan to read this month. I don’t have a big list this month, and in keeping with the upcoming holidays they are holiday and winter themed. I’ve jumped on the “reading ghost stories at Christmas” theme with an Isak Dinesen collection. (I never knew that was a thing)
Anyway, in no particular order: The Quiet Little Woman by Louisa May Alcott; Old Christmas by Washington Irving; The Old Magic of Christmas by Linda Raedisch; The Glass Wonan by Caroline Lea; and Winter’s Tales by Isak Dinesen. I may also reread a very sweet family favorite picture book called The Yule Tomte and the Little Rabbits by Ulf Stark.
Hello Booklovers, After a long and entirely unnecessary hiatus, I am back here on the boards to amuse and entertain you with books. Not mine, sadly, but ones I have piled up to read for my self-curated Summer Reading List, challenging myself to read 30 books in the 14 weeks between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Can I do it? I have in the past, but at this point who the heck knows. As I have in the past, I broke my list into three portions: Fiction (always a challenge for me as I don’t read much of it); Nonfiction, and Poetry. I added a clause that the books must be ones I already own and have not read yet. (There are plenty of those because I am a book goblin building up my secret hoard that I try to hide from my husband by secretly adding new books to the bookcases while he sleeps.) Am I embarrassed to have to admit that there are 30 books in my house that I have not read yet? Not really, because the number is actually much higher than 30. I picked this book up at a library book sale based on how good her other book was): “The day I returned to Templeton steeped in disgrace, the fifty-foot corpse of a monster surfaced in Lake Glimmerglass.” So begins The Monsters of Templeton, a novel spanning two centuries: part a contemporary story of a girl’s search for her father, part historical novel, and part ghost story, this spellbinding novel is at its core a tale of how one town holds the secrets of a family. In the wake of a wildly disastrous affair with her married archeology professor, Willie Upton arrives on the doorstep of her ancestral home in Templeton, New York, where her hippie-turned-born-again-Baptist mom, Vi, still lives. Willie expects to be able to hide in the place that has been home to her family for generations, but the monster’s death changes the fabric of the quiet, picture-perfect town her ancestors founded. Binding them all together is a vision of life as vast as the universe itself. Richly imaginative and wryly perceptive, Latitudes of Longing offers a soaring view of humanity: our beauty and ugliness, our capacity to harm and love each other, and our mysterious and sacred relationship with nature. The Butterfly Lampshade by Aimee Bender: On the night her single mother is taken to a mental hospital after a psychotic episode, eight year-old Francie is staying with her babysitter, waiting to take the train to Los Angeles to go live with her aunt and uncle. There is a lovely lamp next to the couch on which she’s sleeping, the shade adorned with butterflies. When she wakes, Francie spies a dead butterfly, exactly matching the ones on the lamp, floating in a glass of water. She drinks it before the babysitter can see. Twenty years later, Francie is compelled to make sense of that moment, and two other incidents — her discovery of a desiccated beetle from a school paper, and a bouquet of dried roses from some curtains. Her recall is exact — she is sure these things happened. But despite her certainty, she wrestles with the hold these memories maintain over her, and what they say about her own place in the world. As Francie conjures her past and reduces her engagement with the world to a bare minimum, she begins to question her relationship to reality. Nonfiction: Normal Women by Philippa Gregory (Sister read with @BaketressofRoyalHeights): In Normal Women, Gregory draws on an enormous archive of primary and secondary sources to rewrite British history, focusing on the agency, persistence, and effectiveness of everyday women throughout periods of social and cultural transition. Amazon.com offers the following: Originally published as Fruits & Vegetables and Half-Lives: Fruits & Vegetables, originally published in 1971, offers a glimpse into the daring, erotic imagination of a young author of great promise. Here is a writer who puts metaphors in her oven, fruits and vegetables in her bed. In her tide poem, Jong considers the character of the onion: “Not self-righteous like the proletarian potato, nor a siren like the apple. No show-off like the banana. But a modest, self-effacing vegetable, questioning, introspective, peeling itself away . . .” Throughout her debut collection, Erica Jong demonstrates a remarkable adventurousness, erudition, lyricism, and command of the poetic form. At the same time, she examines many of the themes she will pursue in years to come. On the subject of desire, she writes: “The corruption begins with the eyes, / the page, the hunger. / It hangs on the first hook / of the first comma…. The corruption begins with the mouth, / the tongue, the wanting. / The first poem in the world / is I want to eat.”) Complete Poems by Anne Sexton: (NKP: apparently I have read this one already as well, again a few years ago. It must have been a library book, as I just picked up the copy I own from Unnamable Books in Turners Falls, MA just a few weeks ago): From the joy and anguish of her own experience, Sexton fashioned poems that told truths about the inner lives of men and women. This book comprises Sexton’s ten volumes of verse, including the Pulitzer Prize-winner Live or Die, as well as seven poems from her last years. Creative Intuition in Art and Poetry by Jacques Maritain (again, craft and analysis rather than actual poetry): This book explores the rich and complex relationship between art and poetry, shedding invaluable light on what makes each unique yet wholly interdependent. Jacques Maritain insists on the part played by the intellect as well as the imagination, showing how poetry has its source in the preconceptual activity of the rational mind. But intellect is not merely logical and conceptual reason. Maritain reveals how it carries on an exceedingly more profound and obscure life, one that is revealed to us as we seek to penetrate the hidden recesses of poetic and artistic activity. Beautifully illustrated, this illuminating book is the product of a lifelong reflection on the meaning of artistic expression in all its varied forms.
So there you have it. 30 books. 14 weeks. I generally kick off my Summer Reading on Memorial Day weekend (okay, the Friday night of) and wrap it up on Labor Day. My sister and I are reading one book together as she is a huge fan of Philippa Gregory’s historical fiction, and I am an amateur scholar of Women’s Studies. In a make-believe world I would go back to school to earn a Master’s Degree in the Literature of the Sociology of Women’s History (is that even a thing??) but I prefer to spend my money on frivolous things like food and utilities. This was an epic of an adventure taking readers to the days of Britain’s legends. The Wild Hunt rides, kings and princes jockey for power, and queens play politics like a chess game. Lucy Holland’s writing is fantastic; her world-building is authentic, it is clear that she conducted a great deal of research in order to recreate Saxon Britain as historians have written it. The two primary characters, the proud warrior Herla and fierce Queen Aethelburg are brilliantly presented. They are intelligent, strong, dedicated to their people and their causes. Herla and Aethelburg face both the internal scheming of the human Wessex court and the power of the Lord of the Otherworld. Any fantasy fan, historical fiction reader, readers interested in Iron Age Britain, anyone that likes a good adventure, really, will appreciate this book.
This book is absolutely priceless! The prompts had me giggling and reaching for my pen before I even finished reading it. Some are thought-provoking, some lighthearted, and others laugh-out-loud funny, so much so that I started reading it out loud to my family and we all began plotting mini stories. I received it as an eBook, but I will be buying a hard copy to add to my writing books. This is a wonderful resource for anyone that writes, is thinking about writing, or for any creative mind, really. The prompts invite you to think about things on the slant, and anyone will benefit from that.
